Start With the Hot-Versus-Cold Test

- Run the cold side into a clear glass for 20 to 30 seconds. Set the glass aside.
- Run the hot side into a second clear glass. Let it run long enough that you are drawing water that has been sitting in the tank, not just the short run of pipe under the sink.

Cause 1: Sediment Stirred Off the Tank Floor

Sediment discoloration has a recognizable pattern:
- The first hot water of the day looks worst.
- The water often clears if you let a hot faucet run.
- You may also hear popping or rumbling while the burner or elements fire.
- A quart from the drain valve looks cloudy, sandy, or rust-tinted.
Sediment does not have to be red to tint the water. Fine rust that settled years ago will ride out with the grit when the heater cycles.
Fix: Flush the tank until the water leaving the drain valve runs clear. Use a hose rated for hot water, a bucket so you can watch the first gallons, and enough time to empty and rinse, not a 30-second trickle. Cause 2: A Depleted Anode Rod
The anode rod is a magnesium, aluminum, or aluminum-zinc bar threaded into the top of the tank (or, on some brands, combined with the hot outlet). It is designed to corrode so the steel tank does not. When the rod is reduced to a thin steel core or a stub, the next available metal is the tank.
Rusty hot water is one of the later symptoms of a missing anode. Earlier clues include a rotten-egg smell on magnesium rods in sulfate water, or simply a heater that has never had the rod checked. How to confirm: After you shut off power or gas and drop the tank pressure, remove the anode and look at it. A healthy rod still has a substantial metal body. For a standard residential tank with a dedicated 3/4-inch NPT anode port and enough overhead clearance, a full-length aluminum rod is a common hardware-store replacement. Cause 3: The Tank Lining Has Failed
The glass lining is not a perfect coating. It can have small uncoated spots from the factory, and it can crack as the steel expands and contracts over years of heat cycles. Once water reaches bare steel in many places, rust production does not stop when you add a new anode. The anode can slow further attack. It cannot rebuild the lining.

- Let the water cool if you can wait. Hot drain water scalds and can soften a cheap hose.
- Close the cold inlet if you want a true tank sample rather than a mix of incoming water.
- Attach the hose, put the free end in a white bucket, and open the drain valve a little.
- Catch the first quart. Look for sand, flakes, and color.

- Fine sand or white grit that settles quickly: mineral sediment. Flush.

Step-by-Step: Work the Problem in Order
Skip ahead only if you already know both hot and cold are brown.
1. Rule out a single faucet
Swap to another hot tap on a different floor. Clean both aerators. If the problem is one fixture, stop there.
2. Confirm it is hot-only
Repeat the two-glass test at a second location. Two fixtures with brown hot water and clear cold water put the source at the heater or the shared hot main.
3. Check for water on the floor
If the tank is leaking from the steel shell, discoloration is a side issue. Shut the cold inlet, power or gas off, and see leaking from the bottom.
4. Look at the heater’s age and history

Is Brown Hot Water Safe?
Iron that stains sinks is usually an aesthetic issue. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists iron as a secondary (non-enforceable) drinking-water standard at 0.3 milligrams per liter because of taste and staining, not because iron at that level is treated as a primary health contaminant.
That does not mean you should ignore the water.
